Association agreement, social cohesion and political dialogue on menu for Ms Ferrero-Waldner's visit to Mexico

Brussels, 06/02/2006 (Agence Europe) - On her visit to Mexico, from 7 to 9 February, the Commissioner for External Relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, is to hold a discussion with President Vicente Fox and the Mexican Minister for foreign affairs Luis Ernesto Derbez on a range of issues related to Union-Mexico bilateral relations. In particular, they will discuss: -the implementation of the association agreement of 2000 and negotiations underway on the extension of its planks on services, investments and agriculture; -the implementation of the programme of aid to social development, the reduction of inequalities, the consolidation of the rule of law and scientific and technological cooperation; -the implementation of the 2005 agreement on science and technology. Ms Ferrero-Waldner will announce to the Mexican authorities the priorities of the Union for the coming years, in particular on social cohesion and political dialogue and, economically, the development of SMEs and the completion of the free-trade zone. The Europeans and Mexicans will also discuss the political situation in Mexico in the run-up to the presidential elections of July. Ms Ferrero-Waldner will also meet representatives of the legal authority to discuss cooperation activities carried out between the Union in Mexico in the field of justice.
