MEPs deplore Jacques Chirac's remarks about nuclear option

Brussels, 27/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Parliament's sub-committee on defence and security launched an attack in due form against President Chirac for his comments on the possibility of France using targeted nuclear strikes (EUROPE 9115), during an exchange of views with the Austrian ambassador with the EU Political and Security Committee (COPS), Franz-Josef Kuglitsch. French Socialist Michel Rocard said he fully disagreed with Chirac's remarks, and asked whether they were compatible with a European strategy for combating terrorism based on cooperation between EU Member States. Portuguese Socialist Ana Maria Gomes and British Liberal Andrew Duff said the declaration by President Chirac is incompatible with European security strategy. “Can such comments be put down to the health of the French president?”, Ms Gomes said, considering it “inconceivable that the EU Council should let this pass”. Spanish Green member Raul Romeva and Polish Liberal Janusz Onyszkiewicz replaced these comments in the context of the attempts by the EU-3 to convince Iran not to resume its nuclear programme. Mr Onyszkiewicz asked whether Mr Chirac's declaration would complicate the diplomatic effort underway.
