Brussels, 20/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - On 20 January, the European Commission adopted a decision setting rules to implement the secure information and coordination network connected to the Internet and to be used by the services of the Member States with responsibility for migratory flow. This tool, to be known as Iconet, will allow the Member States immediately to report incidents and any new trends observed within the field of illegal emigration. The decision adopted by the Commission, in line with decision 2005/267/EC of the Council, which created Iconet, lays down rules on procedures for access to the network, confidentiality, transmission, storage, modification, archiving and removing information. The Commission will monitor the content of information transiting via Iconet and remove "any information which does not respect the provisions of Community or national law applicable with this respect, particularly within the field of data protection", a press release states. However, "for technical and legal reasons", this network does not yet allow data of a personal nature to be exchanged.
