Strasbourg, 20/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - Adopting a common resolution on human rights in Cambodia on Thursday, the European Parliament highlighted concerns at recent arrests and legal proceedings, concerned that such incidents fall foul of the Cambodian government's pledges to donors and local people to build a more open, democratic and fair society. The constant arrests of opposition leaders, trade union leaders, journalists and representatives of NGOs sends an unfortunate message to donors, explains the EP, calling on the EU to make continuation of its financial support conditions on improving the human rights situation. Repeating their desire for a special EP delegation to be sent to Cambodia, the MEPs call on the country to respect its international obligations, including the Cooperation Agreement with the EU. The EP is calling for all charges to be dropped against human rights activists and for the release of Cheam Channy, a Cambodian parliamentarian sentenced to seven years in prison and for the annulment of the court ruling against Sam Rainsy, leader of the parliamentary opposition, whose parliamentary immunity should be re-instated.
