Brussels, 16/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - PostEurop, the association of 43 European postal operators, generally supports the changes proposed by the European Commission to the regulations in force on air security, but hopes several changes will be made, especially in order to differentiate between “mail” and “cargo” in the texts. The association recognises in a press release dated 12 December the efforts made by the Commission to set in place elementary common standards for air safety within the EU, and states it is in favour of Regulations EC 2320/2002 and EC 622/2003, adopted following the attacks of 11 September 2001. On the question of the changes proposed by the Commission, it refuses to group the “mail” and “freight” categories under the “general and imprecise” term, “cargo”, saying that the elimination of the existing exemptions for mail would have a very negative impact on the international exchange of mail as European citizens know it today.
