Strasbourg, 16/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the European Parliament confirmed its wishes that Bulgaria and Romania will be able to join European Union on 1 January 2007 as planned, whilst highlighting the efforts which remain to be made (EUROPE will return on the reports by French Socialist Pierre Moscovici concerning Romania and British Conservative member Geoffrey Van Orden on Bulgaria). On Romania, the plenary unanimously adopted an amendment calling on the government to authorise international adoptions requested before the entry into force of new legislation on this subject, on 1 January 2005. Belgian Liberal Frédérique Ries welcomed this move in a press release, commenting: "it is a 'no' to indifference (...). Over 400 families whose dossiers were tabled between 2001 and 2004 are affected (...). So are 400 Romanian children, who have virtually been adopted by these families, with whom they have had much contact over the last three or four years".
