13/12/2005 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in the Conciliation Committee on 6 December, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU reached agreement on a regulation setting out common rules for professional drivers in terms of driving time, breaks and rest periods. The regulation makes the use of digital tachographs (spy-in-the-cab) compulsory for road transport vehicles. The Council and EP say that want to ensure digital tachographs are compulsory on all new vehicles from May 2006 onwards. The Conciliation Committee also reached agreement on a directive setting minimum requirements for professional divers in terms of driving time and rest periods.
