Results for 2005 positive, says Jacques Barrot

Brussels, 24/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - Four guidelines have steered the transport policy of the Barroso Commission over the course of its first year, Commissioner Jacques Barrot explained to a small group of journalists on Thursday. These are: - the promotion of inter-modality on transport, in order to transfer as much transport as possible from road to rail; - the reinforcement of the security of transport with, "as the sweetest victory of this year", the agreement to bring in, in 2006, a "blacklist" in the field of aviation, so that checks can also be made on third-country aircraft; - the advancement of major technological projects, with the designation of the concession-holder tasked with managing the deployment and operation phases of GALILEO, the launch of SESAR (management of air traffic) and an agreement on the ERTMS (management of rail traffic) project; - the resumption of negotiations with the United States on the "Open Skies" agreement: an initial consensus was reached on a large number of aspects, but the issues of "ownership" and company control remain to be resolved. Mr Barrot took pains to stress that this result sheet for 2005 was made easier by the "remarkable work" achieved by François Lamoureux, "who was an excellent, very active director-general", but who has just been transferred (EUROPE 9065). 2006 will also be a "very important year", particularly in terms of updating the White Paper on transport. Mr Barrot also hopes to concentrate on continuing the work on inter-modality, road safety and problems of urban congestion.
