24/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - Speaking on Wednesday before the EP international trade committee, Peter Mandelson hinted that the Commission might intervene to put an end to the temporary ban on imports into Russia of meat (since 10 November) and vegetable products (since 14 November) from Poland. Russia noted irregularities in the certificates that accompanied the deliveries but Mandelson expressed “doubt” about Moscow's reasons ands said “I am in close touch with the new Polish government about the serious dispute concerning meat exports. We have taken action in the past and there will be scope for us to take action in the future”. During the Agriculture Council of 22 November, Polish Minister Krysztof Jurgiel had called for Union support in order to get the Russian borders opened up again to Polish meat and vegetable products, considering the Russian bans as ”disproportionate to the irregularities noted”.
