Brussels, 23/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - The EU-3 (Germany, France and the United Kingdom) and Russia are reported to have put the date of 6 December to Teheran for a meeting that is to explore the possibility of resuming formal talks on the Iranian nuclear programme, according to diplomatic sources cited by AFP. The place of the meeting has apparently not yet been fixed but there is talk of Vienna, Geneva or Moscow. On Wednesday, the spokesperson for the EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, did not wish to confirm the information. The EU wishes to continue dialogue with Teheran on the nuclear issue as it is hoping for the problem to be resolved in a diplomatic fashion but it is too early to say whether conditions for such a meeting will be met, the spokesperson said. “The first stage will be the IAEA Board of Governors” on 24 November in Vienna and “after that, we'll see”, she said. If Iranians show proof of good will, and if the tone of their intervention and their attitude are positive, then a meeting could effectively be contemplated in the very short term, the spokesperson said. In Teheran, the Iranian foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, has already told the press that his country is willing to resume talks. “The atmosphere exists for such negotiations to be held after the Vienna meeting” of the IAEA governing board, the minister said. On Tuesday, Mr Mottaki spoke with the president-in-office of the European Council, Jack Straw, on the phone.
