22/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - In a communique, CDU member Werner Langen gave a somewhat critical report on one year under Commission President Barroso. The MEP mainly reproaches the Commission with lacking firmness on the Stability and Growth Pact, for taking “solitary” initiatives such as that on a globalisation fund and for José Manuel Barroso's insistence on having “more money for the EU budget”. “There are many positive things that have come out of the first 365 days under this Commission”, was quite the opposite view expressed by Hans-Werner Müller, Secretary General of UEAPME, which represents small and medium-sized enterprise in the EU. In particular, Müller welcomes the attention paid by the Commission to SMEs and its initiative on “better regulation”. “In the lack of real strategic leadership in Council”, the Commission must “give guidance to EU policy”, he said, warning against the adverse effect of any interinstitutional conflict.
