22/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - In a press release the European Commission says that it has granted 2 million euro in humanitarian aid to help deal with a serious outbreak of yellow fever in the South Kordofan region of Sudan. The press release goes on to say that, without urgent action in the region, which is a “crossroads with many population movements”, the epidemic could quickly spread to other parts of the country (the mosquito-borne illness has already claimed 124 lives). Commissioner Louis Michel stressed that the Commission, as a front-line donor, “will make funds available for containing and eradicating this epidemic”. The aid, channelled through the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, will be used for a vaccination campaign, initially targeting 1.8 million people.
