Brussels, 17/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - At a meeting on 15 November of the political parties of the Dutch Senate, the senators rejected the idea of turning the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia based in Vienna into a Human Rights Agency. In a press release, the Dutch Senate explains it was 'not convinced of the necessity of this proposal and therefore send a very clear message to the government to prevent the establishment of a Human Rights Agency. The Agency as proposed will unnecessarily duplicate the activities of existing institutions and organisation, specifically the Council of Europe, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. The Agency will also make an undesired distinction between the EU25 and the other 21 European countries.
