17/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - The 'Baltic Europe' Intergroup of the European Parliament will be publishing a paper for the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, ahead of the General Affairs Council of 21 November, which will be discussing the future of the Northern Dimension. On Wednesday, the European Parliament plenary adopted a resolution on the Baltic Sea (which we will be returning to). The Intergroup's paper was prepared by Latvian Girts Kristovskis, Estonian Toomas Ilves, German Michael Gahler and UK MEP Christopher Beazley. They comment that the most recent round of enlargement of the EU 'has changed the geopolitical map of Northern Europe and moved the EU's geographical focus towards the north-east'. In a press release, they say they want to 'save the already heavily polluted Baltic Sea, stimulate trade, investment and infrastructure, to ease the flow of people and goods across borders while working closely together to combat organised crime. The region could also serve as a pilot in implementing the four Common Spaces between the EU and Russia.'
