THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/ethiopia

07/11/2005 (Agence Europe) - The High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, held talks on Friday with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi, whom he asked to show restraint, further to the arrest of several opposition leaders and the excessive use of force on the part of the Ethiopian authorities after recent troubles. At the same time, Mr Solana stated that representatives of the Ethiopian opposition should take their places both in the Federal Parliament and in the city of Addis Ababa, after the results of last May's general elections. Without a peaceful and negotiated solution, the already tense relations between Ethiopian and Eritrea, its neighbour, may get much worse, warned Mr Solana (see EUROPE 9049 on the resolution adopted by the European Parliament).
