26/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - French UMP MEP Françoise Grossetête (PPE-DE) has written to Commissioner Markos Kyprianou to ask him to launch a large-scale information campaign across the European Union on “shaken baby" syndrome. In France alone, more than 300 babies are receive emergency hospital treatment each year. Half of these babies suffer serious consequences and more than thirty babies die this way every year. “The first message to send out to parents is not to let anger get the better of them when a baby cries continually: you must never shake a baby (…) The brains of infants are not yet attached and back-and-forth movements in the head cause tears and bleeding. It only takes one time and a few seconds to cause lasting damage”, Ms Grossetête writes.
