Negotiations continuing with FAPL on sale of media rights for English Premier League football matches

Brussels, 26/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Monday evening, the European Commission announced that Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes had received a reply from Richard Scudamore, Chief Executive of the Football Association Premier League (FAPL) in England in response to her letter of 21 October. The Commission had requested clarifications on the measures put forward by the FAPL on 18 October to end the en block sale of all media rights for English Premier League football matches to Rupert Murdoch's TV company BSkyB (which has the sole right to broadcast live matches for the 2004-2006 season). The Commission believes this is anti-competitive and asked the FAPL to divide up media rights for future football seasons to allow other TV companies the right to broadcast live matches. Agreement was reached in December 2003 whereby the FAPL agreed to end exclusive media rights for 2007-2010, but the negotiations fell through in the end. In August this year, the European Commission asked FAPL to submit concrete suggestions as soon as possible, but the suggestions sent in (see EUROPE 9008) were not totally clear. The European Commission says 'The Commissioner will analyse the letter carefully to assess whether the clarifications she sought have been addressed.'
