21/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Commission welcomes the latest proposals of Premier League that manages the UK's football championship, on the subject of the broadcasting rights for the period 2007-2010, Neelie Kroes (competition) announced on Friday through her spokesman. Ms Kroes “values the FAPL's commitments that each package of rights would be sold individually to the highest bidder on a standalone basis, and that the final stage of the auction process would be handled by a trustee”, he said. To date, only BSkyB holds these rights. In a letter sent to the director general of Premier League, Richard Scudamore, the Commissioner nonetheless calls for improvements on some points, by Monday. The Commission's position remains that the Premier League must sell the packages in a way that ensures that at least two broadcasters each obtain a viable and meaningful share of the live match broadcast rights because the Commission wants viewers and football fans to enjoy more choice and better value, the spokesperson said.
