Human rights organisations launch 'European Call for Dignity'

Brussels, 17/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - 'European fortress turns into a wall of shame' runs the heading of a petition launched in Brussels on 13 October by a series of human rights associations, including the AEDH (European Human Rights Association), the FIDH (International Federation of Human Rights Leagues), and the Ligue francaise and the Ligue belge des Droits de l'homme (LDH France, LDH Belgium). Following the recent tragedy in Ceuta and Melilla (see EUROPE 9048), the petition calls on the Moroccan government to 'cease such inhuman treatment' of people travelling through Morocco; and on the Spanish government, EU Member States' governments and the European Commission to 'end these massive and repeated violations of human rights… the direct consequence of a migratory policy focussed on closing and externalisation, leading only to a dead-end and violence'; and on the European Union 'to set, right now, a real immigration and asylum policy, respectful of the human rights, dignity and integrity of every human being.'
