12/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - Italian trade union CGIL organised a round table discussion in Brussels on 11 October on the future of international trade unionism, where Emilio Gabaglio, former Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) said the new international trade union structure should not be restricted to a merger between the two big existing organisations, CISL/ICGTU and CMT/WTC, but should lay new bases to ensure the trade union world can speak with one voice on the global scene. CGIL Confederal Secretary for International Affairs, Titti Di Salvo, explains in a press release, that workers needed more rights in a globalised world, while ETUC Secretary General John Monks gave his full support to the trade union merger, pointing out that the ETUC was a successful example at European level. Guy Ryder, CISL Secretary General, said the merger would be an important contribution to the establishment of new global democracy.
