12/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - Asked by reporters about the budget situation in Greece, Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said on Monday evening in Luxembourg that he was waiting for Athens' second report (to be submitted to the Commission at the end of the month) to assess implementation of measures following the April ECOFIN Council's recommendations. After the Eurogroup meeting (see EUROPE 9046), European Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia again admitted that the target of reducing Greece's budget deficit from 6.6% in 2004 to 3.6% in 2005 was extremely ambitious and he could understand why the government had adopted one-off measures following lower income in 2005. He said it was up to Eurostat to decide on the securitisation of future revenue being planned by the Greek authorities, but the target of getting back below the 3% cut-off point in 2006 had to be achieved through structural measures.
