12/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - Europol's Information System (EIS) is available to authorised law enforcement staff in all 25 Member States, starting from 10 October this year. Based on the Europol Convention of 1995, the EIS supplements Europol's IT system, TECS. EIS is a database of all the personal characteristics of people who have either committed crimes or are suspected of having committed crimes. Europol Director Max-Peter Ratzel said: 'The Information System will be an important tool, together with other IT systems, to speed up the exchange (of) relevant information within law enforcement agencies. This will make it harder for criminals to operate within the European Union.'
