Positive assessment of European Aviation Safety Agency

Brussels, 04/10/2005 (Agence Europe) - Two years after it was set up (on 28 September 2003) and in the prospect of it being given greater powers, the Cologne-based European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has, in the words of its managing director Patrick Goudou has a broadly positive first two years. During this time it has increased the number of experts working for it from 10 to 150; issued certificates to 20,000 aircraft; and increased standardisation in Member States' inspections. But recent air crashes have demonstrated that more work has to be done to improve safety in European airspace. He says the Commission should make the EASA responsible for granting licences to pilots, onboard staff and aircraft from countries outside the EU followed, at a later stage, by airport operations and air traffic control.
