Brussels, 20/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Greek Minister of Transport, Michael Liapis, announced to the press on 19 September that Olympic Airlines intended to appeal to the Court of Justice to challenge the Commission's decision concerning illegal State aid paid out to Olympic Airlines and to Olympic Airways since 2002. (EUROPE 9027). This information was not confirmed by the Commission and the exact amount to be reimbursed has still not been announced. Wednesday last, the Commission found Greece guilty of having continued to pay the illegal aid to the airline companies, Olympic Airways and Olympic Airlines, failing to comply with the verdict reached in December 2002 when it was first found guilty of this offence. The Commission considers that the aid paid out since 2002 amounted to around EUR 540 million, but the sum to be reimbursed will depend on negotiations with the Greek authorities, in particular the EUR 350 million in fiscal and social debts that have not been paid by Olympic Airways.
