THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/turkey

08/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, the Cypriot government repeated its wish to discuss Turkey at an extraordinary meeting of foreign affairs ministers of the EU, prior to the opening of accession negotiations with Ankara, which are planned for 3 October. "I hope we will be able to hold an emergency session of the General Affairs and External Relations Council on 26 September", said the Cypriot Minister for foreign affairs, George Iacovou, on Thursday. As Jack Straw said in Newport last week, the UK Presidency believes on the other hand that it is "not preferable" to convene this kind of special meeting before 3 October. "Up to now, we have been sticking to our time-table", said a spokesperson to the Presidency on Thursday.
