08/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - Rumours were flying in the press office at Thursday's JHA Council in Newcastle on Thursday (nothing mentioned officially) about statements by British home office minister Charles Clarke at the European Parliament that the European Convention of Human Rights would have to be reviewed. Constitutional Affairs Minister Charles Falconer said the aim with regard to deportations of people connected with terrorism was to consider the need for European Court of Justice judges to take account of the danger of the person in question to the EU, not just the risks the person might encounter in the country he or she is deported to. Asked at the press conference about the issue, several ministers rejected the suggestion, with the Spanish justice minister indirectly hinting that the current Convention had to be kept, strengthened even in future.
