THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/turkey

01/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Conference of Presidents of the EP political groups decided on Thursday to defer till the plenary beginning on 26 September the vote on the Brok report (initially foreseen for 7 September) relating to the additional protocol to the EU/Turkey customs union agreement signed this summer by Ankara. Announcing this in a press release, Elmar Brok says that the deferral is only the “logical consequence” of the “unilateral declaration by Turkey” whereby “extension of the customs union to Cyprus would not amount to the recognition of Cyprus” by Ankara. As, in these conditions, “Cyprus could not use Turkish ports or airports, the protocol would otherwise be of no practical use”, Mr Brok said, warning: “Council and Commission have to find a satisfactory answer to this question. Otherwise, a decision on the start of negotiations with Turkey on the 3 October is from my point of view almost unfeasible”.
