01/09/2005 (Agence Europe) - The publication of black lists of the less reliable airlines by certain Member States (see EUROPE 9017) is a “good first step” but these lists contain some inconsistencies that could confuse passengers, Stefaan De Rynck, Spokesman for Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot, told the press on Thursday. The spokesman, who pointed out that Mr Barrot had proposed, in February, that such a list should be drawn up, therefore reaffirmed the Commission's preference for a European list based on common criteria established with Member States with a view to being able to effectively ban flights with unsafe airlines. The Commission would also like to have the possibility, in the case of emergency, to add names to this list, still after consultation with Member States, he said, commenting that hitherto Member States have not been inclined to recognise Community competence in this field but that, with the growing number of air accidents, it could be time to think again.
