Brussels, 26/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - 'We think this project is pointless. We are not afraid of it,' said Belarus foreign ministry spokesman Ruslan Yesin on 25 August, according to Reuters. He was commenting on EU plans to support Germany's Deutsche Welle radio, which will bean a 15-minute programme into Belarus five days a week for a year from November onwards (see EUROPE 9012). Internet programmes will also be transmitted (in Russian). Last Wednesday, the European Commission announced a budget of EUR 138,000 for daily broadcasts to Belarus, to inform the ex-Soviet state's 10 million inhabitants about the state of human rights, pluralism, the rule of law and human rights.
