Commission supports independent radio programmes - First action of this kind in Belarus

Brussels, 24/08/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission announced on 24 August that it had granted 138 000 euros to the German radio station Deutsche Welle to allow it to broadcast radio and internet-based programmes in Belarus for one year from 1 November 2005. A press release from the Commission states that in the initial phase the programmes will be primarily in Russian, one of the languages of the country, but that Belarusian could be added in the future.
