27/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The prime minister of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Vlado Buckovski reiterated the fact that his country would not accept a compromise on the official name of the country in order to facilitate its accession to the European Union. According to the ANA press agency in Greece, Buckovski informed students this week at the University of Krusev, that he had no intention of changing the constitutional name of the country, “Republic of Macedonia”, which is sharply opposed in Greece and which is not recognised by the UN or EU. In 2004 FYROM applied to join the EU. The European Commission is currently examining the candidacy and preparing its opinion, expected to be presented at the end of the year. FYROM hopes to be able to begin accession negotiations in 2006. It has already concluded a Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU.
