27/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - Contrary to what was announced in an earlier edition (EUROPE 8998), European Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson has changed his mind and decided at the last moment to go to Geneva on Thursday after all to attend the meeting of the WTO General Council which, on Friday, is to discuss the state of Doha Round trade negotiations. “If things are not going as well as hoped, this is one more reason to remain totally engaged and to do everything possible to make talks move forward”, Mandelson commented. The General Council's meeting aims to prepare the ministerial conference scheduled to be held in Hong Kong in December and which, in principle, should result in a general proposal for an agreement allowing the Doha Round to be brought to a conclusion in 2006.
