Brussels, 22/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - During the EU/Kazakhstan Cooperation Council, which met on Tuesday in Brussels under the presidency of the British European Affairs Minister, Douglas Alexander, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Akhmetzhan Smagulovich Yessimov, the EU urged the Kazak authorities to come fully into line with international (and OSCE) norms and standards when it comes to democracy, human rights and rule of law (and especially concerning the freedom of the press and of political parties, the organisation of elections, work of NGOs, etc.). Kazakhstan must also improve the management of its borders and migratory flows, the EU stresses. In the economic area, both sides stressed the importance they attach to the development of Caspian hydrocarbon reserves for ensuring EU security of energy supplies and the development of Kazakhstan's economy.
