22/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Centre for European Reform has recently published a survey in which it gives its assurance that the economic impact of Turkey's accession to the EU would be limited but positive. The survey, by Katinka Barysch, maintains that the prospect of EU membership will be less of a motivation for economic reform in Turkey than in the ten new Member States because, at the end of the day, accession is not certain and the interest of citizens less strong. It considers that Turkey has an economy of no more than 2-3% of the EU's GDP, so that the direct impact of its accession into the EU will be limited. Turkey is urged to respect the customs union agreement, maintain investor confidence and tackle its endemic unemployment. See http://www.cer.org.uk.
