01/07/2005 (Agence Europe) - The EPP-ED Group at the European Parliament this week awarded the “Robert Schuman Medal” to Wolfgang Schäuble. The former chief of the German Chancellery under Helmut Kohl's government received the prize for his “exceptional commitment” to European integration and above all for the major contribution that he has made to the debate on the European Constitution, the leader of the EPP Group at the EP, Hans-Gert Pöttering, stressed when the prize was awarded on Wednesday at the EP. Mr Schäuble is currently vice-president of the CDU/CSU Group at the Bundestag and responsible for European foreign and security policy. In 2004, the prize had been awarded to Pope Jean-Paul II and to the former Polish prime minister, Tadeusz Mazowiecki.
