Brussels, 13/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Following the lodging of a motion of censure at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday against the Commission, wanting the Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, to attend a hearing of MEPs to explain his links with Greek industrialist Spiro Latsis (see yesterday's Europe, p.7), the leaders of the four main political groups at the EP immediately clarified the matter, saying they would not be supporting the initiative by British UKIP MEP Nigel Farage, which was destined to be a failure. In a joint statement published on Friday, Hans-Gert Pottering (EEP-ED), Martin Schulz (PES), Graham Watson (ALDE) and Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Monica Frassoni (Greens) said that the members of their political groups, a total of 597 of the 732 Members of the EP, 'expressed their opposition to the motion of censure'. They went on: 'We consider this initiative to be unjustified and disproportionate and principally designed to seek publicity for its authors,' The motion of censure will be debated at the European Parliament in plenary in Brussels on 25 May 2005. A spokesperson for the Commission said on Friday that Jose Manuel Barroso had not yet decided whether he himself would take part in the debate or whether the Commission would be represented by a different Commissioner.
