Brussels, 04/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Peter Hustinx, the European data protection supervisor (EDPS), has voiced his reservations on the proposed decision on the exchange of information from criminal records (EUROPE 8897). In an opinion published in the official journal of the European Union of 8 March 2005, he states that this proposal has too broad a scope, because it is not limited to serious crimes, also referring to judgements and decisions made by the administrative authorities. Furthermore, he adds, it does not offer all the necessary guarantees to ensure the adequate protection of the data against risk, such as compromising the social re-integration of a person convicted of a crime. Political agreement was reached by the Council on this point on 25 February 2005 and will be confirmed at a later date.
