EU to closely follow peace negotiations in Aceh

Brussels, 04/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - The EU is willing to take part with observer status at the peace talks currently being held between the representatives of the separatist Aceh rebels and the Indonesian government. This was what emerged from discussions at the EU's Political and Security Committee (COPS) held on Tuesday 3 May on the basis of ideas put forward by Martti Ahtisaari, former Finnish President now acting as ombudsman in the inter-party conflict. The Indonesian government and the separatist group, GAM (Movement for the Liberation of Aceh), are invited to a fourth series of peace talks, from 26 to 31 May in Finland. Over 240,000 persons have been killed or have disappeared during the conflict that has opposed the government and GAM over the past 30 years in the province of Aceh, which has rich oil reserves.
