European Parliament says European Union should keep close eye on scourge of doping in sport

Strasbourg, 21/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 14 April the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the fight against drugs in sport, in an effort to draw attention to this increasing problem, which currently goes beyond professional sports men and women and is having an influence on amateur clubs and young sportspeople. This scourge is therefore of direct concern to public health, protection of minors, priority areas for the European Union, underlines Parliament. MEPs are therefore inviting the EU to put into place an effective and integrated policy in all areas concerned by supporting an information, education and pharmaceutical research campaign. They are also calling on the Commission to propose, in the context of the 7th Framework Research and Development Programme, new research on different methods to detect and fight drug taking in sport. They are also requesting collaboration with the World Anti-Doping Agency, the Council of Europe and the WHO to coordinate action for fighting effectively.
