European Commission authorises social aid for air passengers from Outermost regions

Brussels, 21/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday the Commission decided to authorise two social State aid schemes designed to help certain categories of air passenger living in France's outermost regions. A press release explained that one scheme is aimed at certain categories of passenger wishing to fly to mainland France from Martinique, such as students studying in mainland France or persons with reduced mobility, which aims to offset the permanent disadvantage suffered by the inhabitants of Martinique, where air fares are much higher than in mainland France. The aid, totalling around €250 for one return flight per person per year,[1] will be available for scheduled flights between Fort-de-France and mainland France. The press release explains that the second aid scheme is designed to provide free air transport, under certain conditions, for students studying or training in mainland France or another EU country. In both cases, aid is granted to passengers irrespective of which airline they travel with.
