Vilnius, 21/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - A Member State that says “no” to the constitutional treaty “immediately becomes a weak, or weaker, country in the Union. Its influence becomes fragile and it is a political breakdown for the European Union” because “the current treaties are not sufficient”, the French foreign minister, Michel Barnier, said speaking in Vilnius on Thursday. Results of over twelve successive polls show the “no vote” winning in France at the referendum of 29 May. The former European Commissioner responsible for regional policy and institutional reform (who was in Vilnius for the informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers) hopes the Franco-French debate in his country will take on a European dimension. In substance, he noted at a press conference that already six countries of the Union have approved the constitutional treaty and that these are positive and important signs for French citizens and the proof that it is a debate at European level. Michel Barnier trusts that, at the end of the day, the French will choose progress to make the European Union move forward.
