Beijing demands “clarifications” from Luxembourg Presidency on lifting arms embargo

Brussels, 31/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - China confirmed on Thursday that it had asked the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU Council to “clarify” its ideas on the uncertainty surrounding lifting the arms embargo before June. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Liu Jianchao declared that they had only read the press articles and had asked Luxembourg to clarify, according to AFP. A European agreement on lifting the embargo on arms to China could not take place before the end of June, as the EU had envisaged, the Luxembourg Presidency of the Union indicated on Tuesday. “It is an objective, but it is an objective which cannot be achieved”, the Luxembourg delegated minister Nicolas Schmitt declared to the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee. The anti-secession law adopted by the Chinese Parliament on 14 March “does not make subsequent steps in lifting the embargo easier”, Mr Schmitt said. “Maybe the press articles contain errors, but whatever the case may be, we hope that the EU will take a fair decision and lift the embargo to promote bilateral relations without pointless obstacles”, Mr Liu added to the press.
