Brussels, 15/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - The European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN) is organising a day of action on 21 March under the heading, ”Make or Break Social Europe - Let's Defend the 68 Million People Who Live Facing Poverty in the EU”. The objective is to reaffirm that social cohesion and the fight against poverty remain a priority for the EU. Different action is planned such as: press activities, petitions, and street demonstrations. Several organisations, including EAPN, have launched the campaign “SOS Europe - Save Our Social Europe” to demand the Summit of 22-23 March better integrate the social dimension into the Lisbon Strategy. Organisations and individuals are called on to sign an on line petition (http: //http://www.soseurope.org ) and support a declaration to be sent to Jean-Claude Juncker during the Summit (Info: http://www.eapn.org ) .
Trade Union Demonstrations for Jobs and Fundamental Social Rights
On the eve of the Spring Summit, the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has called for a demonstration on 19 March in Brussels to defend jobs, fundamental social rights and to reject the Bolkestein directive on services. The EAPN will join this demonstration in the name of people experiencing poverty and social exclusion (Info: http://www.etuc.org ).
