Brussels, 15/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - Confusion appears to be reigning at the EU and the plaintiffs (USA and Australia) following the WTO verdict on Tuesday on the Community system on geographical indications on food products. Washington and Canberra complained to the WTO because they considered that the Community regulation of 1992 protecting around 700 geographical indications constituted discrimination. According to a Commission press release the WTO “confirmed the integrity of the European system and rejected the complaints of the USA and Australia”. On the other hand, according to Australia, the WTO has condemned the fact that the EU demands protection from third countries for geographical indications on European products.
