Brussels, 09/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - EU High Representative for CFSP, Javier Solana, met a group of nine representatives of the multi-confessional opposition of the Lebanese parliament in Brussels on 9 March. He said the assassination of the former Prime Minister of Lebanon, Rafic Hariri, had given rise to special vigilance but also “some concern” on the part of the EU. He confirmed that the EU would support a “free, independent, sovereign and democratic” Lebanon and that the key to this lies in the unity of the Lebanese people as a whole. In a press release, he hailed the unprecedented peaceful movement on the part of the Lebanese people and said the EU would make every effort to ensure full and immediate application of the UN Security Council Resolution 1559, and is willing to contribute to ensure that the elections scheduled for May unfold in a free and transparent manner, which will mark a “crucial” stage in the history of Lebanon.
