Brussels, 01/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday the European Parliament adopted in second reading the report by Janelly Fourtou (ALDE - French) on the modification of the Community customs code, which paves the way for the final adoption of the legislative act modifying Regulation 2913/92/EC. In a press release, László Kovács, European Commissioner responsible for customs policy, welcomed this breakthrough that will provide greater security not only for European Union citizens, but also to EU trading partners. The revision of the Community customs code aims to enhance the security and safety of good that cross Community borders. It foresees the electronic sharing of information between customs officer and creates an EU-wide computerised risk management system. It aims to accelerate the formalities at borders for honest operators. In May 2004 the Competitiveness Council managed to reach a political agreement with a qualified majority on this dossier, against opposition from Greece, Italy, Portugal, Sw3edenand Malta (see EUROPE of 20 May 2004).
