Brussels, 15/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - Greenpeace International used Saint-Valentine's Day to continue its warnings about the presence of “potentially hazardous substances in known perfumes”. In a report entitled, “Eaux de toxins” published on Friday, the organisation analysed the presence of two groups of potentially hazardous artificial chemicals in 36 perfumes: phthalates and synthetic musks, substances that are not covered by any legislation. “Perfume should be a pleasure to wear, not a source of chemical build-up in our bodies”, declared Helen Perivier from Greenpeace, adding, “Our loved ones deserve a toxic-free future. Requiring the mandatory substitution of hazardous chemicals through REACH is the best opportunity we have to deliver to that future”. Greenpeace pointed out that REACH is being subject to “intense lobbying by the chemicals industry and US government and would only be effective if the substitution principle was applied (on hazardous substances). Greenpeace has offered each MEP a St Valentine's Day card and a copy of the report (see http: //eu.greenpeace.org/downloads/chem/GPperfumereport.pdf and http: //activism.greenpeace.org/docuents/perfumecard.pdf).
