Brussels, 09/02/2005 (Agence Europe) - Spain has applied for “miel de Galicia” to be registered in the list under the 1992 regulation on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin. The product for which Spain is requesting the protected geographical indication (PGI) is produced and processed throughout the autonomous community of Galicia. According to its botanical origin, the honey is classified in the following categories: multi-flower honey, single-flower honey from eucalyptus, single-flower honey from chestnut, multi-flower honey from blackberry and single-flower honey from heather. Honey protected by a PGI has to conform to very precise physico-chemical (maximum water-content 18.5%, disastase activity of minimum 9 on the Gothe scale), pollen (minimum percentage) and organoleptic characteristics.
