NEW ROMANIAN PRIME MINISTER COMMITTED TO HIS ENGAGEMENTS ESPECIALLY ON JUSTICE AND CORRUPTION

Brussels, 24/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - On his first visit to the Barroso Commission, in Brussels on 24 February, the new head of the Romanian government, Calin Popescu Tericeanu, who was accompanied by several ministers, said that he was “convinced” that Romania can keep all its commitments in the dossiers where accession negotiations have run into difficulties, especially in the fields of competition, the environment, structural reforms, but particularly justice, the freedom of expression for the media and the fight against corruption. With my meetings today, I hope to “create a team spirit between Romanian and EU leaders”, he said, noting that the Romanian authorities had already taken “initial measures” to fight corruption. President Barroso, speaking alongside him, stressed: the best way to fight corruption, is to have independent justice and press. The Prime Ministers said that his country hoped to join the EU on 1 January 2007, and to be a “country with respect and equal rights” with the other Member States.
