FINAL PREPARATIONS FOR POLICE MISSION IN KINSHASA

Brussels, 24/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - EU ambassadors meeting at the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) gave their approval on Thursday to the operations plan (OPLAN) for the future EU police mission in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This confidential document, which draws up a framework for the Europol Kinshasa mission, still has to be formally adopted by EU foreign affairs ministers, probably during their meeting on 31 January. On 9 December the EU adopted a decision setting up this mission, the objective of which is to help with the setting up of an integrated police unit in Kinshasa. Around thirty EUROPOL members could be in the field by mid-February under the command of the Portuguese Commissioner Adilio Custodio for a period of twelve months. Coreper also approved a draft agreement between the EU and the DRC on the status and activities of the mission, which should also be adopted by EU foreign affairs ministers.
